The creation of the Archive

The idea of creating a musicological archive pursuing multiple objectives has existed since the establishment of the Chair of Musicology in the late 1970s at the newly founded University of Crete. This archive would simultaneously operate as a Museum and Research Centre for Music with separate sectors: Cretan traditional music, Greek folk music, Byzantine ecclesiastical music, Ancient Greek music, music of the Mediterranean countries and Éntekhno Greek and European music.

The overarching goal was to compile and record all tunes and dances being heard on the island at the time.
This archive largely constitutes the implementation of this goal.
